Minerva Talk: Global Teacher Prize winner 2018, Ms Andria Zafirakou MBE
Thursday 6th June 2019, 4.30-5.30pm
We would like to invite you to a very special Minerva talk which will be delivered by Ms Andria Zafirakou MBE, on Thursday 6th June 2019 from 4.30pm until 5.30pm (with refreshments served from 4.15pm). Ms Zafirakou won the ‘Global Teacher Prize’ and was awarded $1million by the Varkey Foundation in 2018.
Born in Northwest London to Greek Cypriot parents, Ms Zafirakou was state educated in Brent and Camden and has devoted her teaching career to Alperton Community School. The school is located in London’s Borough of Brent, one of the most ethnically diverse places in the country where 130 languages are spoken in its schools.
Within a year of teaching arts and textiles at Alperton Community School Ms Zafirakou was promoted to Deputy Head of Art. In the thirteen years since, Ms Zafirakou career has been led by her passion for education and its power to transform the lives of young people and underserved communities. Her creative approach and astonishing efforts to redesign the school’s curriculum to accommodate the widely differing needs of her pupils have put Alperton Community School in the top 5% of the country in terms of qualifications and accreditations.
Now Associate Deputy Head Teacher leading on staff professional development, Ms Zafirakou has used her $1million prize money to found a charity called Artists in Residence (AiR) with the aim of improving arts education in schools. Her inclusion in the top ten of The Evening Standard’s 1000 Londoners List is evidence of her role as a person of significant influence and achievement.
