The talk will aim to give a general overview of the Soviet Union's prison system, known as the Gulag. This operated as one of the vastest prison systems in history, with 18 million people incarcerated between the years 1929-53. As well as providing a pottered history of the Gulag, the talk will also focus on the speaker's current research which involves looking at the western reaction to the setting up of Gulag camps.
Jonny Crowe
Jonny Crowe is currently completing an MPhil in Modern European History at Cambridge University, writing his dissertation on the international response to early prison camps set up in the Soviet Union. Prior to this, he spent three wonderful years teaching history at St James Senior Girls' School.
